Score needed on final exam

The Final Grade Calculator answers the question every student asks in the final week of semester: "What score do I need on the final to get an A?" You enter three numbers — your current grade, your target grade, and how much the final is worth — and the calculator instantly returns the minimum score you need on the final exam to hit your target.
The calculator also gives contextual feedback. If your required score is over 100%, it warns you that the target is unreachable without extra credit. If it is below zero, it tells you that you have already secured your target. Scores between 90% and 100% are flagged as challenging but possible, while anything below 90% is marked achievable with focused study.
Required Final = ( Target − Current × (1 − w) ) ÷ w
Where w is the final's weight expressed as a decimal (e.g. 30% = 0.30). The formula works because your final grade is a weighted average of your current grade (weight = 1 − w) and your final exam (weight = w). Solving for the final exam score gives the formula above.
Suppose your current grade is 82%, your target is 88% (B+), and the final is worth 35% of your grade:
You would need a 99.14% on the final to reach 88%. That is extremely demanding — consider whether a B is acceptable instead, or whether extra credit is available.
Beyond the obvious "can I still get an A?" question, this calculator helps you allocate study time strategically across multiple courses. If Course A requires a 70% on the final to maintain an A and Course B requires a 95%, it makes sense to spend more time on Course B where the marginal hour has more impact. This is especially valuable during finals week when time is the scarcest resource.
The calculator is also useful for setting realistic expectations. If you discover that even a perfect final would only lift you from a C+ to a B-, you can mentally accept the B- and redirect energy to a course where the final matters more. Conversely, discovering that a strong final could move you from a B to an A- can be the motivation you need to push through the last week of studying. Use this tool alongside our Grade Calculator to get a complete picture of where you stand.
The formula is: Required Final = (Target Grade - Current Grade × (1 - Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight. For example, if your current grade is 85%, your target is 90%, and the final is worth 30% of your grade: Required = (90 - 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 - 59.5) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7%. In this case you would need 101.7%, which is impossible without extra credit.
It means you cannot reach your target grade with the final exam alone, even if you score 100%. Your options are to ask about extra credit, lower your target grade, or focus on maximizing the final to get as close as possible.
Congratulations — you have already secured your target grade. Even scoring 0 on the final would still leave you above your target. You can relax (within reason).
Yes. Enter the final exam's weight as a percentage of your total grade. If your syllabus says the final is worth 30%, enter 30. The calculator converts it to a decimal automatically.
Yes. The math works for any single assessment — a midterm, a project, or a quiz. Just enter the weight of that assessment and your target grade.
