Date arithmetic is more complex than it first appears because of leap years. A leap year occurs every 4 years, except century years not divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not. This means the number of days between, say, March 1, 1900 and March 1, 2000 is not exactly 100 × 365 = 36,500 — it is 36,525 days because of the 25 leap days in between (24 from regular leap years plus 2000, minus 1900).
